Although maintenance is not a fun job, it is no doubt the most crucial things one needs to do in order to maintain and prolong the life of commodities or even oneself. One of the most maintenance heavy commodities is pipes and tubes. In every building, industrial or residential there are multiple pipes carrying water, gas, and other substances. With an entire building relying on the pipes for their everyday function, its maintenance plays a critical role in the smooth operation of an industry, or for residents of the building to carry about daily life without any sort of hassle.

The major problem with tubes is that over time as the fluids flow, some deposits and, sediments get stuck on the walls of the pipes and thus leads to a decrease in efficiency and a risk to breaks or seepage in pipes and tubes. This maintenance is absolutely critical in industrial buildings and factories. Industries have pipe standards that require them to be able to carry a certain amount of fluid load and maintain a certain temperature to ensure a high heat transfer rate.

Another type of tubes and pipes that require an even greater detail of maintenance is pharmaceutical tubes. Since in medicine sterility is primary maintaining clean and germfree tubes are of utmost importance. Pharmaceutical tubes are also required to be free of foreign matter and corrosion.

Due to the differing types of tubes many types of cleaning methods and tools exist, some of them are:

  • Lost tubes: a single use tube primarily used in medicine. This isn’t a cleaning method but in fact a type of tube which gets used only once to avoid risk of infection and due to high costs in cleaning such tubes. It is instead easier to mass manufacture for cheap.
  • Chemical processes: the process of cleaning using liquids is termed as chemical processes, it usually involves three stages: 1. Activation 2. Cleaning and 3. Rinsing.
  • Mechanical process: a process that uses solids or bodies to remove deposits off the walls of the tubes. Two types of processes namely offline and online process exist. Depending on the tube type one of these processes can be implemented. For example, Heat exchanger tube cleaning requires an online method to aid the flow of the cleaning balls or solids, whereas boiler tube cleaners require an offline system as it cannot be cleaned when in use.
  • Thermal process: a heating method that is used to dry off the deposit, which that flakes off due to embrittlement, can be easily discharged using a cleaning liquid. It is an offline process and is commonly used in the pharmaceutical and food industry.

There are various other experimental cleaning methods which could make maintaining tubes and pipes easier. All in all, it is always critical to maintaining pipes and tubes to ensure a long-term efficient usage and for a good functioning of the system. Maintenance also ensures that there is less risk of accidents and hazards are reduced considerably. Spending some money to maintain is significantly less than what is needed to repair.
